Ava Grant holds an oversized check for $1,000 and poses for a photo with two Eastman employees

MHS sophomore Ava Grant has been awarded $1,000 by Eastman for placing second in the company's annual Black History Month Oratorical Contest!

To participate in the contest, students were asked to write an essay about a notable African American contributor to the fields of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM).

Ava, a student in Lynn Deckel's English class, wrote about Alexa Irene Canady, the first African American woman in the US to become a neurosurgeon.

MCPS students have won the contest for the previous two years.
